Ruffus Brut Sauvage voted best Belgian wine in 2015

Ruffus Brut Sauvage, a sparkling wine from Vignoble des Agaises in Haulchin (near Binche, in Wallonia) was selected as overall winner of the 2015 Best Belgian Wine competition, held every year during the Brussels Megavino wine fair, writes Het Laatste Nieuws.

A total of 68 wines vied for recognition at the 11th edition of the competition, including sparkling, red and white wines. A jury made up of more than 50 professional tasters and sommeliers chose 20 wines to receive a gold medal.

With the highest score of more than 91%, the Ruffus Brut Sauvage from 2013, a dry, sparkling wine based on Chardonnay grapes, came out on top, resulting in a crystal trophy for winemaker Raymond Leroy.

With 18 hectares and 180,000, Leroy’s Agaises is Belgium’s largest winery. The region around Haulchin is known for its white, chalky soil that is perfectly suited for the production of Chardonnay wines.
